Meet New Team McAfee CEO Jimmy Watson

Nothing ever stands still in the cryptosphere, especially when it comes to anything related to John McAfee. Not content to rest on his laurels, McAfee constantly seeks out new challenges and opportunities. His latest move, accepting the role as CEO of Luxcore, positions McAfee at the head of an organization driving real innovation in the crypto space.

Never one to take on more than he can handle, McAfee realized that accepting this role required him to take a step back from the day-to-day operations of his homegrown Team McAfee organization. To accomplish this, McAfee promoted Executive Advisor Jimmy Watson to CEO as part of a massive reorganization that included a change of name from “McAfee Crypto Team” to “Team McAfee”.

But who is Jimmy Watson, and why has McAfee entrusted him with the future of the flagship of the McAfee empire? I sat down with Jimmy to talk about his background, and his plans for the future of Team McAfee.

In order to gain a grasp on Watson’s competence as a leader, it is important to understand where he comes from. Watson is a former U.S. Navy SEAL Sniper and United States Marine Team Leader with over 17 years combined leadership experience. This experience defines Watson’s identity, and instilled in him a sense of responsibility, dedication and loyalty.

His time spent in several different branches of service was anything but a walkover. During the course of his service, he completed over 400 high-level combat missions. He graduated BUDS (Basic Underwater Demolition School), one of the most challenging special operations courses in the world. He also successfully completed many other advanced training programs, including team leadership courses, SEAL Delivery Vehicle pilot training, and mission specialist training.

After leaving the service, Watson put his leadership skills to use in civilian roles for various organizations. He has served as a representative and military liaison for KaiserUS Amphibian, Chief Operations Officer of Girls Rising Above Child Exploitation (GRACE), and Chief Executive Officer of Ares International Inc. before joining the McAfee Crypto Team as Executive Advisor.

History is never a good predictor of future behavior, and it was his work in this last role that convinced McAfee that this was the person he needed to take the team to the next level. Seizing the initiative, Watson used his role to increase the team’s footprint and cement quality partnerships within the cryptosphere.

But it hasn’t been all sugar and roses for Watson. When you undertake to work for John McAfee, you’d better be prepared to work under heavy fire, a reality that this author can attest to personally. And the attacks from without and within have been non-stop since Watson joined the team. Watson has proven himself to be cool under heat, meeting team goals and expanding the overall mission while parrying the nonsense.

Refusing to be distracted by others, Watson has a clear vision for the future. That vision includes not only the success of Team McAfee, but also the success of the cryptocurrency community as a whole. This became clear while discussing the change in the team name and branding.

“In order for cryptocurrency to succeed as we want it to, we have to drive adoption outside the current user base,” stated Watson. “The change in name indicates a shift in focus. We are looking hard at projects and partnerships outside of the existing community, designed to introduce new people, communities and industries to the benefits of crypto-literacy and adoption.”

An ambitious goal, but also representative of an attitude that is sorely needed if cryptocurrency is to leap the hurdles blocking mainstream adoption. Preaching to the choir at conferences, on social media and even in the press might feel good, but it does nothing to grow the movement. By targeting industries and communities outside the “traditional” crypto space, Watson has his eye on the real prize of future growth.

Like the rest of his history, Watson has not chosen the easy road. And with the myriad forces aligned against the growth of cryptocurrency, Watson and Team McAfee have their work cut out for them. It should speak volumes, therefore, that Watson enjoys John McAfee’s complete confidence as he sets to his task.

“Jimmy Watson brings the leadership experience Team McAfee needs to bring our operations to the next level,” stated McAfee. “Look for Team McAfee to make waves in the months and years to come.”
